Very funny.
Sounds perfect to me
Good idea from Waterman on sport FM. Let clubs name their 35 Colts list at the beginning of the year and then it’s open slather after 18 years of age for anyone left.
That was some of the Tiger’s riches could flow into the league quicker and even up the comp sooner.
Can’t say TT liking this one.
Perth, by the way, got the full reserves treatment this week. Massive win for the tigers.
Isn’t that how it works already?
Players are linked to their WAFL club based on where they reside at the age of 15.
A player can move to another WAFL club before their 18th birthday if both clubs agree and their parents sign a Form 4.
Once they turn 18 the player can sign their own Form 4 and again move clubs if they wish, unless they have been listed on their Senior squads protected 40 list. If they are on the Protected 40 then they can’t be poached.
Perth should be well aware of the Protected 40 list, didn’t Leggett get to move to EF because Perth failed to retain him on their Protected 40 list!
All of the above hinges on 1 key factor, is the player willing to move WAFL clubs if they have made the colts or senior squad of their current WAFL team?
Given that there’s not been a mass exodus or even a consistent flow from our colts or senior squads to other clubs then I’m pretty confident the vast majority of our players are happy playing at Claremont.
I’ll go even further to suggest that the majority fringe players and those who miss the final squad generally prefer to play in PFL at clubs like Uni, West Coast, Wembley and Scarborough with their mates than go to some WAFL clubs.
Tigers last paragraph is spot on and the only way around it is to allow Clubs who can afford it to offer extra money. Raise the Wafl salary cap by $200K - Perth can afford this.
Are Perth making a $200k+ profit every year?
If you are then I’d be getting your new facility sorted first before pushing for an increased salary cap.
The way accounting works it’s difficult for someone not in the field to know. Brett Raponi was saying that The Falcons made $50K on the bar post a recent game (made or brought in - unclear). My thoughts are if this is the case - 4 more good functions would be able to bring in $200k very easily. Like I said earlier in this thread though - Shiny Digs are needed and fast to create an environment that keeps the players around.
Not sure he’s the most reliable source for info but lets work through the numbers.
$50k revenue would need to be 500 people at $100 each over the bar. For a $50k profit you’d have to double your attendance 1000 or double your average spend $200 per person.
All 3 scenarios seem unrealistic. If he was saying that they profited $50k from their Gala auction night including event ticket sales, auction items and raffles then that’s a believable figure…but you cant run 3 or 4 of those a year.
A modern facility will be the best investment Perth can make in the short and long-term. Players will want to be there, new recruits will be more likely to sign up, more supporters will turn up and most importantly new supporters will be happy to attend.
Make sure you’ve got a passive income source available within the new facility, such as a sub-leasable area or 2 with the rent going to PFC and then you start to set up the financial future of the club.
Volunteers and Sponsors are getting harder to find for the WAFL clubs, and relying on WAFC annual handouts is very limiting, and we all know the membership bases of clubs are getting older and there is only so many times you can go back to the well.
Are you saying profit is only 50% of revenue? I would like to think that it’s at least 75%.
Sum wise 30 cans of VB @ dan murphy costs $63 call it $2 a can - Sold for $8 a can (I think) in the Pig Pen @ lathlain.
Not wanting every youngster to be a boozer but I often think that beer/wine/softdrinks at the WAFL should be a lot cheaper (sort of like bowling clubs) to entice the 20 year olds. It wasn’t long ago that Millionaires deck were selling $5 cans. I’m pretty sure a Pint @ Lathlain is $12 or $13 - Ok for me at 55 but not enticing for the youngsters if they can get the same at a trendy pub for a $ more.
Agreed about passive income with new facility.
75% profit, you’re dreaming!
Bar Staff wages and super for time to set up and stock the function, serve and pack down after. Contract cleaners for function room and toilets. Coolroom/fridge maintenance along with beer line cleaning, gas to keep the beer bubbly and glycol maintenance. Then you’ve got utility costs.
I was being generous at 50% and only because most clubs pay little to nothing in the form of facility rent especially when compared to what a commercial hospitality venue pays.
I think Colts are tied to their club till 19 ATM. That was the story on sport FM, anyway.
18 or 19 doesn’t really matter.
There are plenty of ways a player can move clubs if they choose too.
No definitely agree with the 35 player squad for colts clubs definitely can make it harder than it needs to be for a young player to move.
They can show no interest until another club says we want him then can take a few weeks to have another look at the player.
Where as if he isnt named in a squad and 35 is probably too many they would be free to go straight to another club and be given an opportunity
Pretty sure Cl have 35 PSA boys alone…let alone the other Cl boys doing it rough in the western suburbs state schools.
