Boycott knighted and rightly so
almost impossible to dismiss and you could count on one hand how many times Boycs played a lofted shot in test cricket , and that’s if he ever did.
he batted a whole day for 90 odd against Australia bugger all boundaries but not one false shot or mishit shot
To describe him at the crease - the exact reverse of a bowling machine
Had a large falling out with the ECB and sat out a bit of test cricket
His commentary straight to the truth and it ruffled more feathers at times
I think he does deserve it
Southerner: a very good tribute, and great to read. I remember his 99 not out in 1979-1980.
Have to admit I hated him as a batsman for England as he was so bloody hard to dismiss.
But i do love his forthright commentary both on TV and radio over the years where he pulls no punches and tells it how it is in that strong Yorkshire accent of his!
spot on bease, spot on
There is a lot of noise on social media about Boycott and domestic abuse. I’m not aware of the details of that.
Depending on how reliable you consider Wikipedia to be, there’s quite a bit of detail on Geoff Boycott’s alleged domestic violence charges.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffrey_Boycott#Domestic_violence_and_conviction
Being from Yorkshire (Yorkshire 1 England 2, and we’re not talking soccer scores), I wouldn’t be surprised if Geoffrey cares very little for the British Royal Family down south and thus can take or leave his knighthood (though, he obviously took it).
Unlike Ian Botham, who stormed out of the room in disgust when comedian Gerry Connolly was dressed up as Dizzy Lizzy at a 1992 Cricket World Cup function prior to the MCG final.
Back to Boycs, I enjoyed his dogged batting but was always happy when (two days later) we dismissed him.
As a commentator, he’s without peer IMHO, not being afraid to dish it out to England when they play badly (which has happened far more often than I expected this series).
Boycott was definitely a one man band…had the pleasure of being on the end of a telephone spray from Boycott during my time living in Leeds..think my Aussie accent goaded the fella into a red mist persona…LOL
Interesting story Freeze.Tell us a bit more about the call and how or why you spoke to him on the phone.
Through work mate, he was making an enquiry about someone, heard my Aussie accent, couldn’t or didn’t get the response he wanted, started going off about Aussies etc. I wound him up by keeping my cool and being polite, purposely not acknowledging who he was and his apparent high status,..got a good spray for a couple of minutes…some words I couldn’t even understand due to his thick Yorkshire accent…but in the end I told him it was probably best to ring back when he had calmed down…never phoned back from memory…LOL…this was back in 95…good cricketer…just a selfish one.
Good last point above Freeze as I always got the feeling Geoff Boycott played for Geoff Boycott 1st and England 2nd as he was more interested in preserving his average with a red ink not out than helping his side push the total along a bit quicker.
Boycott was also responsible for the stoic English openers that followed- Chris Tavare, Bill Athey, Mike Atherton etc some of those were corpse with pads on!!!
good posts lads
there are a few videos on ytube demonstrating Boycott at his worst 1 on commentary with Tony Grieg and the other with David Llyodd, whom takes the piddle very well. There is also another video where Jon Agnew plays a joke on him regarding his 100th hundred from memory – all very good.
I rather enjoyed this one.
