Great stuff from Bill but the change is inevitable, this change was agreed to a long time ago.
I don’t swallow the tripe the club is throwing at us (playing as Joondalup Falcons, trading as West Perth Football Club) and I can’t believe that there are supporters stupid enough to repeat it as a justification. When we change to Joondalup it is a complete change.
Do like the payback by The Sunday Times for the club taking this story to 7West first and not their own major sponsor. Hope to see more of it on 9.
If that is true JD then the Club have once played it well and got plenty of publicity and support. Also allowed C9 to take moral ground and simply respond to SWM bull shite. Reading the Clubs statement though it does say members will decide if in fact goes that far. Guess you can have your vote then assuming you are a member
Isn’t West Perth a club originally formed from a merger, who has changed its colours, it’s nickname and its location (3 times) in 125 years of history…seems like a lot of resistance to a name change that will represent its location for the last 20 years from a club that has continued to evolve throughout its history.
Is there a movement to go back to Leederville? The club, unfortunatlly, got caught up in all that ‘football 2000’ rubbish, the WAFL put out in the 1990s. The Lions were to become ‘Carine’ and Perth ‘Southern Districts’, thankfully none of the other stuff happened; not sure how I would vote if I was a WP man, but demography is an important factor in society and history, and, demographically, the club is Joondalup.
greatwhiteshark: good post. I think the club should have the vote, if the traditionalists win than it stays WP. I would prefer to see the club change its name when the WP generation has passed away.
I’ll certainly be asking for details about how this vote will be conducted and seeking an independant auditor to manage the mailout and counting of ballots.
I’ll stand corrected but the last vote that narrowly voted for change was by a simple majority which is 50% and above, this one will be different in that it’s by an absolute majority which I believe needs to be 2/3?
I remember back in the early 60’s when Spud Slater was coaching Subi he wanted to move the club to Scarborough which was a young vital area back then full of young families. The only time it went to a vote was when we had the option of Kingsway or Leederville and the members voted overwhelmingly for Leedo … only 3 votes for Kingsway from memory!!
