Bill Dempsey Speaks Out on West Perth's Future

As told to PerthNow,June 23rd in the WAFL Section.

Bill pretty much spoke of his dismay at the prospect of changing the Club’s name and feeling like he’d leave, should that happen.

Don’t worry Bill. There should be enough good WEST PERTH supporters at the Club to ensure that never happens.

WEST PERTH is too important a Club to throw away 125 Years of History, just to stroke a few insignificant, precious egos.

Just can not see it happening Grassy. to much passion in that Club to see them roll over on a council request

Great stuff from Bill but the change is inevitable, this change was agreed to a long time ago.

I don’t swallow the tripe the club is throwing at us (playing as Joondalup Falcons, trading as West Perth Football Club) and I can’t believe that there are supporters stupid enough to repeat it as a justification. When we change to Joondalup it is a complete change.

Do like the payback by The Sunday Times for the club taking this story to 7West first and not their own major sponsor. Hope to see more of it on 9.

Looks like that vote was Voided and besides, opponents of the change, said there was a strange anomaly about the Vote.

This time, the onus is on the Advocates for change to get a CLEAR majority!

The advocates being, those who would toss 125 years on the Scrapheap!

Just remembet,if you do that, the PERTH Derby reverts to Perth and East Perth.Think about what you’re Throwing Away,LONG AND HARD!

You change,it’s Forever! There is NO TURNING BACK!

If that is true JD then the Club have once played it well and got plenty of publicity and support. Also allowed C9 to take moral ground and simply respond to SWM bull shite. Reading the Clubs statement though it does say members will decide if in fact goes that far. Guess you can have your vote then assuming you are a member

Isn’t West Perth a club originally formed from a merger, who has changed its colours, it’s nickname and its location (3 times) in 125 years of history…seems like a lot of resistance to a name change that will represent its location for the last 20 years from a club that has continued to evolve throughout its history.

Is there a movement to go back to Leederville? The club, unfortunatlly, got caught up in all that ‘football 2000’ rubbish, the WAFL put out in the 1990s. The Lions were to become ‘Carine’ and Perth ‘Southern Districts’, thankfully none of the other stuff happened; not sure how I would vote if I was a WP man, but demography is an important factor in society and history, and, demographically, the club is Joondalup.

Been West Perth since 1891,
Were the Cardinals from 1885 to 1975, Falcons from then to now.
WE Have been Red and Blue since 1891 as far as I know.

Moving to Joondalup of course was the big change.

Subiaco also looked at making Kingsway their home around about the same time as West Perth relocated.

Demographically East Perth and Subiaco are West Perth.
Perth are no where near Perth.
West perth are no where near West perth.

I hear what you are saying though, does it really matter?

greatwhiteshark: good post. I think the club should have the vote, if the traditionalists win than it stays WP. I would prefer to see the club change its name when the WP generation has passed away.

I’ll certainly be asking for details about how this vote will be conducted and seeking an independant auditor to manage the mailout and counting of ballots.

I’ll stand corrected but the last vote that narrowly voted for change was by a simple majority which is 50% and above, this one will be different in that it’s by an absolute majority which I believe needs to be 2/3?

I remember back in the early 60’s when Spud Slater was coaching Subi he wanted to move the club to Scarborough which was a young vital area back then full of young families. The only time it went to a vote was when we had the option of Kingsway or Leederville and the members voted overwhelmingly for Leedo … only 3 votes for Kingsway from memory!!

Reckon the committee will throw it out and will not even go to a vote. Councils don’t run footy clubs

If they’re smart Astro, they won’t touch it with a Barge Pole.

It will be up to Zempilas,Pickard and Co to Launch a motion, then they will have to get the required Majority to carry the motion.

Though lord help the club if those 2 are successfull.I can’t believe Paul Murray and Dennis Commetti can be so bloody STUPID here! :woohoo:
