Along the same lines as Dogman’s jumper number topic and having just got back from the bush got me thinking of who have been the best players from each WA country town as I was driving through each. I will get the ball rolling but feel free to add those you think might be worthy. I will start with the Great Northern/Midlands zone for EF and do each WAFL clubs country zone each week.
Geraldton- Chris Mainwaring, Jim Sewell, Steve McCann, Murray Wrensted, Paddy Ryder
Northampton- Paul Hasleby, Josh Kennedy, Andrew Lockyer, Daniel Chick
Chapman Valley- Kasey Green
Mullewa- Preston Wall, Dwane Simpson
Dongara- Brad Tunbridge
Mingenew- Clinton Browning
Morawa- Max Johnson
Carnamah- Kevin Taylor, Kevin Clune
Carnarvon- Troy Cook, Stephen Bilcich
Cervantes- Mark LeCras
Kalbarri- ?
Three Springs-
Moora- Andrew Purser?
Yalgoo- Josh Simpson
Can add Scotty Rowlands & Glen Hoult to that list mate cannot remember what junior club they came from but I can tell you that Houlty would have been on the Eagle squad if he hadn’t have headed back to the Crayboat decks so soon
Yep definitely mate both were very good players and I know I have missed heaps more good ones from up that way ..maybe our ol mate Frosty can chime in with his rare 2 bobs worth to help out!!
I think you will find that Brad Tunbridge was a Mullewa boy.
Jamie Cripps (West Coast & St Kilda) - Northampton
Chris Hicks - Geraldton
Glenn Hoult Carnarvon/Shark Bay
I think you will find that Jim Sewell was from Mingenew
Harry Taylor (Geelong)played 40+ league games for the Sharks, juniors at Northamptom (same team as Josh Kennedy) and senior footy in Geraldton.
Shane Woewoedin (Brownlow medallist) played juniors in Geraldton.
I think Merv Carrott, Wayne Barnden and Graham Kickett played for Chapman Valley.
Darren Capewell may have been from either Carnarvon or Geraldton. Tropiano, currently at Perth is from Geraldton.
He is in the GNFL team of the Centenary. Played about 5 league games for East Freo, made his debut in derby, gave the South Freo centreman Cooper? a bath but did his knee and then returned home.
Liam Anthony, Craig Burrows, Clint Kirey, Brad Dick, Clinton Wolf, Kevin Worthington, Tarkyn Lockyer and Graham Polak all played in the GNFL before playing WAFL and then AFL/VFL
Sims coached a lot in the GNFL at the Wesfarmers Carnivals…great thread BH…you guys have got it pretty covered…Did Brian Mazzuchelli have a brother called Kevin?..thought he came down to play for a season…Maxy Johnson was better than Wrensted in his first and only year I reckon, very silky skills in 83…Houlty was a favourite…will do some more looking for ya BH but like I said you guys appear to be spot on
Custy that was Kevin Mazzuchelli mate…Kevin Piesse wrote a book on Footy bush legends and Kevin Mazzuchelli was in it from the GNFL…
Lance Durack was a good ruckman from Geraldton from memory, came down with Tunbridge I think…Chris Hicks was a favourite of mine as a youngster tough wingman from memory wearing number 6.
Thanks Freez, yes it was Kevin Mazzuchelli! Another talented GNFL footballer was (Steve?) McCann who by-passed the WAFL when he was recruited directly from Geraldton by North Melbourne in the late 70’s and played about 200 VFL/AFL games.

On another note, East Fremantle’s country zone has been reduced over time and only teams in the GNFL - Brigades, Railways, Rovers, Towns (these four are sides are in Geraldton) , Northampton, Chapman Valley and Mullewa - are in the current East Fremantle country zone.
