Best NSW XI

Found this people, some very strange selections --they have got Trumper in their third XI which is just stupid. I would pick McCabe over Katich and Bevan, one of whom would make a worthy selection in the 2XI. It is good to see Geoff Lawson picked in the XI.

It is interesting that they picked two players – Kippax and Bevan – neither of whom could hit the ball off the square in test cricket, as we know.

He has a 20 game qualification for the state – I can’t believe that the WACA picked Mitch Johnson to this very day, and yet, they did not pick R B Simpson whom most definitely would qualify to be in the WACA’s best side under this sensible rule. We would need him too against this NSW side.

my team:

Trumper --he was the third best cricketer of the 19 century – behind Grace and Hobbs
Morris – averagged 63 for NSW so I am unsure why they picked him in the second XI
Bradman
MccCabe
SR Waugh
Haddin
Noble (captain)
Benaud
Davidson
Lawson
O’Reily

The bowllers I am fine with their selections; one sees good ballance, slow medium, right arm and left arm fast, plus good leg sin. If they played away, such as at the WACA, one could always bring Lindwall into the side at the expense of the Irishman.

12 man Bardsley or Lindwall

Geoff Lawson chosen ahead of Glenn McGrath AR?

My NSW team from 1979 onwards-

Mark Taylor (C)
David Warner
Steve Smith
Mark Waugh
Steve Waugh (V/C)
Michael Clarke
Brad Haddin (w/k)
Brett Lee
Mitchell Starc
Nathan Lyon
Glenn McGrath

12th- Josh Hazlewood
13th- Pat Cummins
14th- Michael Slater

BH – have they played 20 games for NSW?
Slater, Ma Taylor, one would pick them befor the late Phil Hughes.

Warne for example, qualifies to play for Hampshire but not Victoria, he did not bother to play 20 games. Of the more modern bowllers, I would rate only Mcgrath ahead of Lawson, keeping in mind, that Lawson bowlled against better batsmen most of the time; he could also captain the bloody side.

Probably didnt play 20 games for their state because they were too good and busy playing for their country Australia in all formats instead AR!

BH – it is a reasonable criteria, given that he has to make some sort of decision on the question because the test players are away so much. You can tell that this man genuinely enjoys his FC which is fantastic indeed.

Although, I found it irritating when he kept referring to NSWS’ win in 1982-83 shield final, to say the least. He also goes on about Dirk Wellham which is stretching it a bit.

Cummings 7 Shield games, just one more than Imran Khan
Mcgrath has played 23 games so we can include him BH

I bet he didnt refer much to the 1991/92 Sheffield Shield Final AR were a young WA side rolled Geoff Lawson’s highly more experienced mob at the WACA! :cheer:

BH – I enjoyed that game so much – from 3/3 to Shield winners.

So did I AR, the look on Geoff Lawson’s face as NSW were beaten was priceless in itself.
In fact I dont think Lawson has ever got over that loss as evidenced by his continual shit canning of anything to do with WA ever since!

Yep he never tries to hide his disdain for WA. The worst case of sour grapes I have seen…

NSW 2nd XI last 40 years-

Michael Slater
John Dyson
Phil Hughes
Phil Jaques
Rick McCosker
Dirk Wellham
Steve Rixon
Pat Cummins
Josh Hazlewood
Stuart Clark
Mike Whitney

good one Bease – just for the record too, Mcgrath played enough so we can add him to the first XI side even under his criteria. Hazelwood and Lee have both played more than 20 shield games. It is good to see MA Taylor in your side.

I also think he under rates Thommo and Lindwall

Lenny Pascoe & David Hourn were two bowlers who caused a bit of grief for WA sides in Sydney - debatable as to whether they would be in best ever sides though
Ian Davis & Steven Smith (not the modern cheat one) were two other openers who made plenty of runs

Southerner: we certainly had a lot of problems with Horn in Sydney.
Just a little story on the rivalry with NSW, I remember a conversation between K J Hughes and ME Waugh. Waugh was going on about NSW successes, but Hughes pipped up with ‘not when I played’; well, I was honestly waiting for Waugh to say ‘what about 1982’, but to his credit he let it through to the keeper.

Although we were not at full strength in 1982, we did not have Alderman, none the less, it was a blot on WA’s record during an otherwise fine era.

Lenny Pascoe is definitely around the mark when discussing NSW best sides in the last 40 years was a lethal fast bowler on his day.
Gee’s Southy Ian Davis brings back horrific memories of those Australian sides without the WSC boys back in the late 70s- Davis, Peter Toohey, Carlsen, Ogilvie, McLean, Wright, Callan, Whatmore, Weiner, Darling, Hilditch…
Although there was the odd diamond that came out of that motley lot- Border & Hughes.

ark it would be pretty damn hard to quantify who had the better sides between the two states - at one point in time WA had 7 players in the Australian first XI
then later NSW had the same
way too many guys to separate and the big variable was we couldn’t win on the old pitches at the SCG - but NSW couldn’t put up a Ghost at the WACA

In 1981 I think it was Southy WA had these boys all in the Test team-

Graeme Wood
Bruce Laird
Kim Hughes
Rod Marsh (w/k)
Bruce Yardley
Dennis Lillee
Terry Alderman

Graeme Wood too - when he wasn’t running someone out that is
Graham Yallop was out of his league as well , couldn’t captain a turd down into a bogbowl
1982 was the year of the Alderman shocker at the WACA just when he was getting to the top
can’t forget those England ashes series when he smoked Pommie batsmen
