Does anyone know if AR coached Subi in 1928-29? He is on Ric’s site, but I am unable to find any other sources to confirm it.
Gday AR,
Just checked on subi website as i was not aware of this and found that Subi coach in those years was an A Robinson, dont know anything about him but wasnt Ocker Snr as he played for South Melb in those years and later played 3 games for West Perth before coaching Perth in the late 1930’s. Hope this clears it up for you and i will look further into A Robinson after i get back home on the weekend.
thanks jim – it has got me intrigued
Me too AR,
Just did a bit more research and found it was Alex Robinson who played for Essendon before coming to WA and coaching in the goldfields before coaching Subi for those two years.
jim: great stuff mate – thanks – I managed to find a copy of a 1928 budget, as well, and I can confirm everything you wrote above. As well as Robinson, as you know jim, we also had another goldfields product, Dave Cuzens, as our coach in the early 1960s.
Ark, I don’t think Austin Robertson Senior ever coached Subiaco.
The website australianfootball.com is usually on the money for everything footy.
The link below has a few details about Ocker Sr and indicates that he spent 11 years at South Melbourne (1927-37), finished the 1937 WAFL season with West Perth, had two seasons as Perth’s playing coach (1938-39), and then another couple (1940-41) with Port Melbourne in the VFA.
He was back at Perth as non-playing coach in 1948.

Thanks guys, My source was obviously incorrect for this one, I’ve now updated the Subiaco honour board to show the coach in 1928/1929 was Alex Robertson.

Hi Ric, in the budget i saw he was down as ‘alex robinson’ not robertson
they are brillant those honour boards, thanks again for doing them
cheers, ark.
Thanks AR - I’ve checked Subiaco annual reports and they confirm A.Robinson - so I’ve updated the HOmonour Board again for Subi.
Cheers
