AFL Opening Fixture

Isn’t it time to give Carlton the arse from this…time for a change.

They showed a bit in the 2nd and 3rd quarters but yes they have been consistent underperformers for many years now. Terrible news about Alex Rance. Massive blow to Richmonds prospects.

I think Richmond have had a very good run injury wise over the last couple of years especially in regards to their big guns in Martin, Cotchin, Rance and Reiwoldt. Will be interesting to see if they use the mid season draft to bring in a key defender from the 2nd tier state comps.

Huge crowd of 85,000 hard to argue with as a stage to launch the season. Carltons worst is probably behind them, they’ve got something to look forward to now. Mitch McGovern showed he’s going to be a handy addition which gives them a 3 pronged tall marking attack with McKay and Curnow. Sam Walsh looks like a gun and Zac Fisher continues to grow and Petrevski-Seaton is all class it takes the pressure off Cripps.

Time to give both Carlton and Richmond the arse from this. Why should they own this fixture? how hard would it be for the AFL to just start its season off with a GF rematch?

Fisher certainly impressed as did Petrevski Seton. No need to mention EF product Cripps - its a given he would do well, but i did think SF product Jarrod Garlett needs to lift. Possibly wasted in defence given Carlton impotence in front of goals. Mitch McGovern looks to have settled in well. Some encouraging signs for the Blues with others shining at various stages - though Charlie Curnow should look sheepish collecting a cheque for that gutless display last night.

I agree, in regards to the “tradition” of this fixture, do the other 16 clubs all agree with this “tradition?”
It was spooners versus minor premiers

A tradition is something regardless of where you finished the year before surely.

Is it a tradition for Essendon to play Collingwood on ANZAC Day? For some maybe and for some maybe not.

Is it a tradition that East Fremantle v South Fremantle played in the Foundation Day Derby? If it was the weagles seemed indifferent to that.

Is a poor performance, whether it be over a short or extended period of time a measure for tradition?

The 16 clubs will more than likely have their own interpretation of what they think tradition is, which is why seeking their agreement is impractical to say the least.

Impressive start by the Dockers - kicked nearly as many goals in the first game of the season as they did all of last season. 21 goals in a game by just one team must be an AFL record?
