2026 - R1 v Swan Districts at Bassendean Oval

John Todd Cup

So the premiership defence begins

Some retirements and some injury outs

Some good young players like Robinson , Harvey , Geier , Otto & Etherington are up for game time

It will be a test that is for sure

Firstly I have revered John Todd ever since I was a lad , yes my initial experiences were with the man coaching against us but his image is upon our very hallways and woven deep within our very fabric as a club - we have the prestigious John Todd Cup in our hands which I take pride in and value highly.

And so onto today’s game at Bassendean Oval

  1. Respect to Swan Districts - they were gallant until half-time and only folded due to immense pressure and a couple of forced mistakes and that happens in footy all too often as we all know.
  2. We were forced into several changes due to retirements and injuries and a couple of those didn’t handle it all that well I have to say.
  3. Some great efforts by the likes of Winder , Florenca , Free , O’Hehir , Robinson , Boullineau , Ruscoe , Etherington , Hughes to save our Bacon at times in the first half particularly.
  4. We were short some of our better players but found a way to work through it which I was sweating on a little in that first half (full credit to Swan Districts on that)
  5. We will have a decent forward half this year from what I saw and we will pose problems for some with that they were dangerous just about all day.
  6. There were two or three players that need to look closely at their games today - they did not give us much and that just cannot be - just cannot.

All in all though - we have work to do to even come close to winning it again , there’s concerns in areas that will need to be addressed pretty quickly by the coach.
