Well,the odd thing was,as soon as he heard Bill was applying for an NFL job as Head Coach,he’d justify the roadblock by saying he “wasn’t sure Bill was ready for the Ups and downs of Coaching”.
I could concede to Paul,in that it was understandable to a point,he was way too overprotective of Walsh,but to me,all that ringing around was overreach at best,……
In the end,Bill’s stint at Stanford set the ball rolling,though at one point in the early days at the 9ers,he was ready to jump off the cliff,or the plane.Make that the Bridge.
Maybe it was a good thing his guiding light was Philly’s Coach Dick Vermeil(an emotional kind of guy himself),who convinced him to stick with it,success is probably around the corner.
Towards the end of 1980 after a bad run of Losses,the signs were starting to show,things were looking up.
