Great work Stinga…cant forget that empty feeling after the game though…so close…

Yeah, always a shit feeling that.

Yep was a tough day that in 85 - but what a great time in WAFL history it was in 85 and 86 leading up to the Weagles coming into the VFL.
You look back at those two teams back then and they were AFL standard.

Actually in 86 Subi only got beaten by the Hawks (when the 2 premiers use to play each other after the 2 grand finals) by about 5 points I think (both teams at full strength) and Bucky kicked the winning goal for Hawthorn.
Have a look at the Hawks team of 85 - It was full of stars.

WAFL footy at it’s best back then and I was rapt to be there watching it but even better for bing back there in 86 and running around the city end hill getting mugged by all the Old East supporters while singing Glory Glory !!!

1985 was tough but it was the making of Subi as a club.
You gotta loose one to win one - There’s a message there for you Sharks of 2013.

Fark Chop I was thinking the same thing re “you gotta lose one to win one”. Let’s hope hey.

That was Bunt’s response and in footy I think it’s true.

It builds hunger when you get so close - As a coach i think it’s the best weapon going into the next season. Knowing your not far off the big one and with a few tweaks you can get it. It’s realy up to the players this season for the Sharks but shit surely they would want it bad after giving the Tiggers a massive scare after they had you on the ropes???

I wish you guy’s well - This season I think will be tighter than last but the Tiggers and you guy’s should still be 1 & 2 I would think.

Thanks so much Ben (?La Hincha)
I’ve thought about this piece a lot over the years, I recently looked for it on waflvideoarchives at one stage.
I saw it on tv at the time. I’ve never forgotten it and it was amazing to see it again after all these years. I’m sure at the time it was played at the end of the news? Couldnt have been game day as I was at the club getting drunk so must have been on Sunday. I watched it with my late mum and we were both in tears I reckon.
Cant thank you enough for sharing it here. I’ve showed it to my wife to try and help explain what the WAFL used to mean.
Cringe - was that Nisbett and Loxley I saw in the coaches box…

I’d never seen it before so what a treat !!!

Yep Nis & Lox in the box - You’d think that after his time in the WAFL Nisbett would give us more of a thought than the crap he dishes out to the WAFL now ???

Yeah, no matter how many Grand Finals ya lose, it always hurts just as much.

Cheers for the link, all wafl footage is great viewing.

Anyone know how to download / copy the youtube clips onto your own computer for copying onto a dvd?

just watched some great highlights between SF and EF from 1979.

Wonderful footy game. a game i thought we should have one though i imagine the old east supporters would vehemently disagree. why is it that my clearest memory of the match is sellsy miss. i sure don’t blame him for the loss. as the highlights show warren dean miss an easier shot earlier in the game.

any way c’est la vie. we got them next year.

the mighty (diehard) maroons forever

I thought Phil Scott missed one in the dying stages as well MM…ah well…not to worry..as you say we well and truly got them in 86 and that flea David Bushell got cleaned up by Keeney early in the first to make it even sweeter.

The 5pt margin flattered Subi as EF had it wrapped up well b4 that and only got the margin to 5 pts after Scott goaled on the final siren

Swandog you of all people should know the game ain’t over till the final siren (remember when you snached it fron the Tiggers)
The game got out to about a 4 goal lead from memory and Subi were down by 3 goals at the start of time on but were all over East like a rash from that point on. I don’t think that they got it past half forward during time on and Subi could have won but didn’t. Now who deserved to win is up to individuals but to say they were flattered by the scoreline is just bulldust. It was a great grand final one of the best I would imagine and the number of scoring shots was identical.

Teams have won many games coming from behind - East stopped and Subi nearly snached it - Do you think in the last few minutes the East players still thought this is a easy win, we were 3 goals up 6 minutes ago - Me thinks not.
East deserved the win because they finished with a higher score than Subi - That’s as simple as the game is especially in a Grand Final.

Before a Grand Final if both teams are asked what do you want to win by ?
I’m sure the response would be the same - I don’t care I just want to win.

I think you are way off the mark with your response.
