1970 and uniquity

I have been going through a few ladders and noticed something else about the ‘big three’ of the pre-1980 era. In particular, 1970, was the first year only one of the three – EP – made the finals; they qualified ahead of Claremont by percentage if you don’t mind, otherwise it would have been a genuine first in the history of the WAFL – a final series without EF, WP, EP. I studied the ladders from about 1930.

Great year 1970.

Yeah,BrazilWon their 3rd World Cup and the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently with Superstars like Pele,Jairzinho,Rivellino,Tostao and Clodoaldo.

Jogo Bonito.

A truly great year that one was.

Hassa Mann was a premiership captain/coach in 1970. Younger footy fans would not be able to grasp the concept of a player actually being a coach as well. Impossible these days of course with the technical game plans and computer analysis. But there were many premiership captain/coaches in those days. Off the top of my head we had Mal Atwell (1966-68}, Polly Farmer (69 and 71?), Mal Brown (72) and Ross Smith (73). Who coached East Perth to the 1978 premiership ( was it Barry Cable and did he also play that day can’t remember) Was Graham Moss a Premiership Captain/coach in 1981 or was there someone off the ground to support him?
Any others that people can think of?

Neesham at Claremont was the last in WAFL 1989 Premiership at least.

Big Bob Johnson EF 1965 Premiership Captain Coach. Haydn Bunton SD 1961, 62, 63

Murray Ward was Mossy’s off field help in 81 and then went on to do the same for Ron Alexander for EF in 1985. Another C/C in later years to taste Premiership success was former Swans man Gerard Neesham at C in 87-89 as well Mike.
As Custy posted Bunts for us back in 61,62,63 the most famous WAFL Captain/Coach of all

NEVER HEARD OF JACK SHEEDY

Hassa Mann also helped out at Subi for much of the 1970s in various capacities. Bunton was also playing coach from 1968-1971, he coached from off the field in 1972. Claremeont are an interesting one in terms of captain coaches. I believe they had a captain coach for the better part of two decades:

Verdun Howell
Mal Brown
Graham Moss
Neesham

IN 1977, I think there were as many as three in the competition, listed below:

Brown
Dougue
Moss

I must have missed him Captain/Coaching his club to its first 3 Premierships in his first 3 years in the role!

Both equally great names, could be arguable that Bunton had a greater longevity of success achieving multiple flags 25 years apart

I hadnt realised that AR until you pointed it out Dennis Marshall might have had a crack at the dual role at one stage too before Howell from memory?
Remember Peter Daniel AR who was a handy player at Essendon and a C/C in his home state of Tassie before taking on the coaching role at Subiaco in 83 before being replaced by Fairclough half way through the same season?

How did Hassa help out at Subi if he coached Souths!

BH – 100 per cent right; I forgot about Dennis Marshall, sorry.

Anchor: re-read what I wrote, mate.

I did, you said Hassa Mann helped Subiaco out in various capacities.
How could he do that.
I am not being a SA ,just want to know more.

Anch: ‘much of the 1970s’ means I was referring to the decade after he left South. From about 1976 onwards he served as ‘director of coaching’ and chairman of selectors. I hope that helps you out a bit.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Anch: Your welcome, all the best

Not in '77 Ark for Brownie.

He got scrubbed for a year, for the John Colreavy Incident.

He played 10 games under Percy, before he took over as Coach of South in’78.He retired from playing the year before.
