Freeze, Bill had Dodd to build the playing list, not many of his ilk around but we need someone like him, he seems to be a great talent identifier. Plus not sure if Bill left Subi on particularly good terms back in the day. After being a very successful coach of the ressies with Subi it was expected, or he rightly expected to take over the reigns after, I think it was either Germo or Waters, instead they went for that useless plodder Waterman.
Haha, that’s a bit hard Senior.
Tbh have not seen Subi on field look so bad since the early 80s…
At least in the 80’s you could think about developing players for the future. It’s hopeless now. Just a big lucky dip of recruiting from wherever you can and even then if the player comes good, they probably get taken off you.
You need to find a certain level of successful mediocrity in a player.
Interesting comment from a Subi supporter.
Froth, we have had great success recruiting from the VFL over the years, Kitch, Dela and the like, so I think thats where the focus should be. Hard to recruit from SA as they have a much higher salary cap, so hard to compete with the SANFL clubs on money alone.
Do you think Subis run of financial losses or recent years is having an impact?
Bazz, imho, it has, I think the fact we have not done much recruiting over the last few years indicates they were being very careful with finances and at the same time seeing what’s in the cupboard player wise (which has turned out to be not much) while the bean counters try and right the ship. The finances are gradually being sorted out although the Fin report will be an interesting read this year given the horror season we are having. I think the members will start demanding action by the football department to fill the cavernous voids we have particularly down back and on the ball. Souths have shown the way this year with strong recruiting into an already very capable list and we can all see the results, it’s Souths flag to lose.
Baz…the P&L handed to members each year at the AGM hasn’t been great reading in recent times, but we don’t get to see the balance sheet which I believe is still very strong. I recall Kevin Merrifield invested the club’s money in real estate several years ago when he was Pres so you’d think we’d be in a pretty good place financially overall, but the run of operating losses needs to stop sooner rather than later that’s for sure.
BC, didnt they invest in a capital fund, after the Subi Oval stream ended,
I’m talking way before that Baz. Merrifield made a poultice in real estate with his good buddy Kerry Stokes and when he was President, it’s my understanding he invested a chunk of Subi’s money as well.
I’m not sure if that’s still the case, but haven’t seen anything to suggest it’s not.
I received an email today from the club looking for a new CEO. Has Capes pulled the pin already?
Yes BC he chucked it in a while back
Jeez. The club really is falling apart on and off the field.
Capes is one of the best sports administrators going around but has been at Subi for a long time. Not to say he’s run his race, but maybe in himself, feels he’s had enough and perhaps getting stale. Will be interesting to see if he looks somewhere else or is heading to retirement. Will be hard to find someone of his calibre to take over the CEO spot. While major change is in the air with a new coach and CEO, perhaps a full clean out of the football department is also due. I note that SD are also advertising for a new CEO, maybe after their season and the comments from Ducks posters on here, they may also be in the market for a new coach
I noticed his email address is being used for expressions of interest, so he must still be around until season’s end or they find someone else.
