1974

I think 1974 was the year Perth recruited four North Melbourne players in a deal for Barry Cable returning to the Roos for the second time. Involved in the deal were Doug Farrant, David Pretty, Mike Renenbach and Phil Doherty. Doherty was a full forward who never really set the world on fire. Redenbach was a defender whose career was cut short by an eye injury but has continued to support the club ever since, including stints on the board as well as significant sponsorship. Pretty tied with Gary Gibellini for the Simpson medal in the 74 GF. Don’t think he played for too much longer but did design the trident design jumper that was used for just one match in, I think, 76. Gibellini, of course, became a Demon and a very significant member of the 76 and 77 premiership teams. Farrant was a bit of a legend at the Roos and continued to be at Perth. As a ruck rover, played an important role in the premiership years to follow. I even think the club mascot Doug Demon on the side of the grandstand was named after him.
