Think they have already added Richardson to the squad, it is certainly not in the interest of picking form players for test cricket when you look at the current Shield fixturing schedule. On very recent one day form I would give Richardson a go. Don’t think Marsh is in the test squad anymore, then again don’t know how that does/doesn’t work for him when it comes to selection criteria for these selectors.
I mean have a look at Renshaw for example, scores a heap of Shield runs but we won’t pick him (ok fair enough), then there is the South African debacle. Quick lets rush Renshaw over there at short notice (same day as the Shield final finishes) for the last test and then he fails in that.
Then take him to the UAE to play the series against Pakistan (gets concussion) and selectors decide to leave him out of both tests (when he was at least fit for the second one). Then don’t pick him in the squad for the home series against India (after a couple of Shield failures), he then continues his run of outs is averaging under 20 at Shield level for 2018/19.
What do the selectors do now for the home series against Sri Lanka, pick him of course. The young bloke must be shaking his head, apparently a key criteria from Langer and his selection mates is be in good form. Well, when Renshaw does make runs he doesn’t get picked and when he doesn’t he does.
I have nothing against Renshaw and think he should have played the second test against Pakistan in the UAE and has a very bright future for Australia, but even he must be confused the thinking of these blokes.
Patterson makes back to back 100s…won’t be picked as it would make the selectors look even more confused…I guess the logic will be after scoring 2 100s v SL, Patterson is due a low score…whilst Burns and Renshaw are due a high score…be interesting if those two hundreds have secured Patterson an Ashes tour…tho it won’t win him a spot v SL…
If Patterson can close out the Shield season well and get a 100 or two he presents a compelling case for the Ashes tour, that said who could confidently predict what the selectors will do or what logic they would put to it.
Highlights the stupidity of picking the test squad before this game. Patterson as an in form batsman should be playing in the test but he wont be because it would make the selectors look dumb to change things..
Agree mikeh, that way it would of been a true bat off between all comers…score runs and you get selected…create some real match pressure and see who responds…as you say the winner of this battle won’t get a look in, despite the JL mantra of “runs are currency” …
Yep your right, Patterson should as an I form player be playing. Mate, you did say he won’t play because it would make the selectors look stupid.
Just my view, but they already look stupid as it is (whether they put him in the initial squad for the Sri Lankan series or not).
So if they did pick him there may be a chance (slight I grant you) that they look less stupid than what they currently do.
Because if Hohns, Chappell and Langer got in a huddle right now no one is going to play spot the genius.
Now we all wait with bated breath to see if Hohns & Chappell are man enough to add the in form Patterson to the Test side or are too stubborn old fools who we all know should be put out to pasture to let some younger fresher selectors have a go!
perhaps, lads, Langer can poke one of the batsmen in the eye at training and they can add Patterson that way? I am certain Simpson poked Martyn in the eye and that is how Langer got his test spot.
Heavens to Betsy…Patterson is a late addition…good to see the selectors swallow their pride and see some common sense…with Patterson in…surely that means Burns and Renshaw failed to get the nod…Harris Uzzie Labuschagne Patterson Head Pucovski in the top 6…must be one of the least experienced top 6 ever to wear the baggy green…surely?..always great to see new faces…hopefully Patterson and Pucovski can get some runs and give themselves an Ashes spot…
Some common sense being shown here Freezin, pick an in form batsman. Uzzie will have to stand up though as you said possibly the most inexperienced line up ever and the Sri Lankans will see this as an opportunity to turn the corner after their train wreck of a tour of NZ.
True NZ are a tough but to crack at home…but India are playing here in late Jan not Nov or early Dec…pitches are a bit drier, weather, for here, is warmer…plus SL attack was average and no Kohli, Dawan, Sharma or Dohni in the SL batting line up…so big step up in class for the Kiwi side…only way the Kiwis will win if all those above have had their fill and go off the boil…guys like Grandehomme, Neeshsham and Bracewell usually struggle when the quality goes up a notch…Williamson and Taylor will always do well regardless the opposition..
At last some common sense has finally prevailed in adding Patterson to the Test squad now can they actually possibly even pick him in the XI as he is actually the in form batsman!
why is Head still in the team?
to be fair, India out played us more in the tests than the ODIs. Australia could have won the ODI seies had Marsh and Max well batted longer in one match.
the only problem with Patterson is that he due a failure somewhere along the line.
Ark, if Paine hadn’t had a brain implosion in the 2nd innings of the first test, Aust could of won that match instead of going down by 34 runs…also winning the toss in either of the last two matches could of changed events too…especially after winning the toss in Perth and winning after having the better of the conditions showed Aust were capable of beating India…not saying they deserved too tho…as for Head…got a start in every game, had brain fades to get out, which is why he averages mid 30s in first class…never seems to go big…technical? mental?..just needs to overcome this anomaly…I think if Head replicates this v SL then he may struggle getting on the plane to Eng…as much as Patterson is “due” a failure…the likes of Harris, Uzxie and Head are “due” a big score perhaps…if they do go big tho, folk must remember it’s only v SL pop gun attack…watched the likes of NZ boys in Latham and Nichols go big v SL recently…doesn’t mean they are any good TBH.
