Australia need a miracle to make the T20 finals. And that’s a injury riddled out of form Sri Lanka beating England.
We needed to dismiss Afghanistan for under 119 runs to get ahead of the Poms on the NRR.Our game went down to the wire, lol.
When you look at the big 4 countries in this tournament.England,South Africa,NZ and India.
They look miles ahead of us Aussies. There faster in the field, tactically better, have more bowling+batting options. We are slipping behind the better sides.
The coaching of the side and the players attitude towards the coaching.Needs to be looked at to stop our decline.
This could move into the test areana with a young hungry West Indies. And a possible Ashes mauling.
With the likes of Ronald McDonald coaching, a hopelessly out of form Fatty Finch Captaining & the ol hypocrite woke climate crusader himself Cummins how could it have possibly gone all wrong? LOL
I think a few guys can be moved on. I don’t think we have chosen the right players to start with and on top of that the team always seems unbalanced. I think we should be picking our players exclusively from our domestic T20 scene and based on who has done well in that comp. So maybe Ben McDermott and Josh Phillipe get a look in (and others doing well) and move Finch and Warner on. Maybe Wade too or move him up the order. Stoinis should be moved down the order or even moved on completely for young Cam Green. Playing all 3 of Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood in a T20 side seems a bit much. Kane Richardson may be the wrong Richardson and maybe look at Michael Nesser. Batting and bowling at the death in this tournament has been ordinary by the Aussies to say the least.
I was actually hoping that Afghanistan would snatch it because they played a smart game and only that collapse in the middle cost them dearly. Like everyone else other than the selectors I just could not fathom the non selection of Starc, he was the one bowler capable of getting a 5 for in a hurry and bowling Afghanistan out which is what they needed to do. Even though he has been expensive, he is still a wicket taker and his replacement went at 12 runs an over anyway. All this is pretty consistent with the muddled thinking that has characterised this campaign.
In the first half of the game, Maxwell excepted, Australia batted like headless chooks, Warner, Marsh and Stoinis threw their wickets away after promising starts. Just needed one of those guys to stay there with Maxwell and they would have got 190.
Like you mikeh, I kind of wanted Khan to get his side over the line at the end…that to me would of been the wake up call or cull Aust T20 format needed…even if Eng win or lose, the consensus of those involved in the Aust T20 set up, will probably say injury, rain and ill luck were responsible for Aust WC effort.
BH, not sure JL would of picked a different squad to one selected at this tournamt TBH…especially since its only been 12 months since that out of the blue T20 WC success. As for Starc’s non selection…well he was part of the attack that had Ireland 5/25…then coughed up 30 runs from his last 12 deliveries…to me Richardson was a like for like replacement for Starc…both went at 10 plus an over and took a couple of wickets against a reputed minnow side.
A cull is needed, out with the old and in with the new…or young…Totally agree Cummins is not a T20 bowler…but to call him “woke”?..the guy busted his gut in scorching conditions, bowling some big overs on flat tracks in Pakistan, to get his side over the line…and does it regularly at the test level…and no doubt will be required again v SA and next year in India.
Crazy last day of the qualifying round in the T20 World Cup.
It’s started with the huge upset . Neitherlands Vs South Africa.
Who have crashed out of another , international Cricket tournament.
This leaves the winner of Pakistan Vs Bangladesh. As the group two qualifyer ahead of the RSA.
Bangladesh batted first and scored a reasonable 170 runs.Pakistan in response are 0-43..Babar still at the wicket but struggling to score runs.
Bangladesh only made 127 gtr? Great win by the Dutch…just goes to show at this format anyone can beat anyone TBH…gee the Saffies are a nightmare team to support at these knockout comps…9 times out of ten they would beat the Dutch… .just choked today big time…again!
If the Sri Lankans could have scored another 20 runs it may have been enough to see Australia sneak into the semi final although they certainly didnt deserve to be there. India v New Zealand final I reckon
If Pakistan could get their act together with the bat Mike I reckon they could actually win the comp especially with their bowling attack of express pace bowlers- Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf & Mohammad Wasim and then wicket taking leg spin of Shadab Khan plus Iftikhar Ahmed as back up!
Australia don’t have another 20/20 series for another 9 months now so there is a perfect opportunity to rebuild the team for the next world cup in 2024. How about the next team in August 2023 looks something like this:
Josh Phillipe
Josh Inglis (WK)
Mitch Marsh (C)
Ben McDermott
Marcus Stoinis
Glen Maxwell
Cam Green
Ashton Agar
Jhye Richardson
Nathan Ellis
Adam Zampa
Out go Warner Finch, Hazlewood, Cummins and Starc. Hazlewood and Kane Richardson would come in to the squad as extre pace bowlers. One of the biggest mistakes that Australia made in the recent tournament was not using Agar more in tandem with Zampa, The only time Agar played was in Perth and he went for 6 an over. He should be a permanent fixture in the team.

Could this be the 1992 ODI World Cup revisited, Beas, when Pakistan came from nowhere to win?
I suspect both the ICC and MCG authorities would love to see an India-Pakistan final.
That said, the Melbourne forecast for Sunday is rain (surprise, surprise).

We didn’t get the Paki’s v India final but the Paki’s are there which is a great effort after a shaky start. The poms routed India which I dont mind, the Indians are second only to the Australians in the arrogance stakes. I hope the Paki’s can role massive favourites England, but it looks like they may not even get on the field looking at the weather forecast. Shift it to Optus, at least we’ll get a full length game, or shift it to Docklands and close the roof, they play plenty of BBL games there.
Melbourne’s long term weather forecast is for rain for the next week. With 25 mm forecast for Sunday.
Wonder if the ICC will consider a move to Optus Oval. You can’t have a DLS final, will be a disaster for tv ratings.
Two disappointing semi finals.New Zealand and India did not fire.Englands form is peaking. They covered there injuries easily. But Pakistan bring a better bowling attack than India. And have Rizwan and Babar ,in form as openers.
India and New Zealand were at least 10 - 15 runs short of par in batting first and the chasing teams made short work of the targets. Kohli and Williamson are great test and ODI players but I think they actually get in the way of their teams in the powerplays. Williamson scored at about a run a ball but chewed up too many deliveries which then put the pressure on guys like Phillips, Conway and Neesham to take too many risks. Kohli scored 50 off 40 but by the time he got going India were only 100 off 15 overs and despite a finishing burst from Hardik Pandya, 168 was never going to be enough against the rampaging Buttler and Hales.
England were 0-63 after the power play as opposed to India 1- 38 and that is too much for the power batsmen to make up. India need someone like Pant or Pandya to bat in the top 3 to take advantage of the first 6 overs.
As for the final it will be a battle between Pakistans pace and spin attack and the powerful England batting line up. The Melbourne weather may well end up being the winner, which would be a shame becuase it is a fascinating match up.
Rules for the final are min 10 overs each to make it a game, if Sunday is rained out they play Monday with the same 10 over rule, but sounds like they’ll be lucky to get any play on either day. They should have had a contingency of playing at Docklands with a closed roof but would be just over half the G’s capacity.
Well done to England.
Now reigning 50 +20 over World Champions.
Some outstanding all-rounders in there side.
There looking really good for the home Ashes. Our woke cricketers better pull there fingers out.
Gtr agree it is a great achievement by Eng to hold both white ball trophies…though the T20 is a lottery, as proved by Aust woke cricketers winning it 12 months ago.
The only heads up Aust needs out of their performance and that of England’s, is having separate red and white ball coaches…that Eng white ball team is miles away from their red ball team in terms of personel…let McDonald focus on the red and get a Ponting for the white stuff…atleast Ponting would show some imagination with selection and not have any loyalty to the test boys…it’s obvious both formats require specialized skill sets…something the Aussie selectors just can’t or won’t grasp.
Freeze Langer was the coach 12 months ago. They have turned Woke post Langer including McDonald
England were deserved winners. Their bowling and fielding were top class, particularly Curran and Rashid. Would have been an interesting game if Pakistan could have scraped together another 20 runs to bring it up to 160. They were unlucky to lose Afridi as well.
Gee Pakistan imploded over their last 5 -6 overs…as you mikeh, another 30 runs and Eng would of been working hard chasing that down…the Pakistan fast boys did well keeping their team in the game…the Pakistan spinner who completed Afridi’s over, had a nightmare of a final…6 ball duck and got tonked by Stokes for 15 runs off 5 deliveries…
