Sydney Swans slam claims team is unwilling to draft indigenous players

SYDNEY Swans recruiting manager Kinnear Beatson has hit back at explosive allegations that AFL clubs are ill-prepared and increasingly unwilling to draft indigenous players.

Former Fremantle recruiting boss Phil Smart re-ignited the AFL’s simmering race row with bold claims that clubs were unfairly discounting indigenous draft hopefuls because of off-field issues.

In a blunt attack, Smart said AFL clubs did not have a good handle on recruiting indigenous players and described modern-day recruiting strategies as sterile, after only three indigenous players were drafted on Thursday night.

"If they’re not prepared to take a risk with some of these young talented indigenous players because Swan Districts has dropped Dayle Garlett a couple of times for being late to training, I think it is appalling,‘’ Smart said.

"The photo that was in the West Australian - of him having a drink and a cigarette on the back page of the paper on the day of the draft was appalling.

"Just go to any AFL club’s Mad Monday, and you would find the same thing.‘’

Smart said part of the problem was there were no indigenous people among full-time recruiting staff at AFL clubs.

But Beatson defended the Swans’ recruiting philosophies, saying the colour of a draft prospect’s skin was irrelevant to the club’s recruiting choices.

Beatson said clubs had to be diligent about draft prospects’ character and off-field aptitude, regardless of race.

"It’s not an indigenous issue,‘’ Beatson said. "The issue is whether the player has got the discipline and work ethic to succeed at AFL level.

"The colour of their skin is immaterial to us.

"I can tell you four or five players that we wouldn’t have taken for similar (off-field) reasons whose skin was white. One got drafted, the others didn’t.

"I’d back it with my life the reason the others weren’t drafted was the concern about work ethic and concern about their ability to meet requirements at AFL level.‘’

Asked on 3AW whether it was a race-based issue, Smart said: "I have no doubt it is. None at all.‘’

Smart has mentored some of the AFL’s leading indigenous talents, including Garlett, since leaving Fremantle to join WAFL club Swan Districts.

Smart said clubs were guilty of over-analysing indigenous players’ backgrounds without appropriate resources.

"I don’t really think a lot of the clubs have really got a good handle on some of the indigenous players,‘’ he said.

"Not just Dayle Garlett. Shannon Taylor from Claremont Football Club, how he never got drafted amazes me.‘’

Smart said he believed clubs were more open to drafting non-indigenous players with off-field troubles than indigenous prospects with similar issues.

"I would say there would be many players that are non-indigenous that have had the same issues that have been drafted and … I think that’s unfair,‘’ he said.

Smart has a short memory, other indigenous swan disticts’ draftees have gone to AFL clubs with very dark clouds over their heads regarding “off field troubles” and have been managed and have performed well at their respective clubs

i’d say the point he is making Ucker that it seems as though there has been a shift in the thinking of AFL clubs in regards to this years draft..

I agree with this.
The, if you like, demise of Jurrah and the guy who walked out on the Bulldogs Zephinia ??? then I think most clubs have become a bit gun shy.
Not saying it is right but I think that is the reason.
But I think it is a bit short sighted by some clubs. When you look at the AFL there are many Aboriginal players who are succeeding right now, and have others who had great success in the past.
I can’t believe that the eastern states clubs allowed Josh Simpson to get to the Dockers at pick 17.All because the kids missus had a baby.

If you don’t like my postings, skim over or ignore them, its that simple.

I’m disappointed that the administrators pick me up for the slightest perceived indiscretion but allow any vitriolic attack to be made on me. I have a nexus for my posts being “hit and run, non paying” Anthony Stephens, Swan Districts and Phil Smart. Where was yours?
I’m wondering if you would take it on the chin if a he came along, did a hit and run on your car and didn’t pay the damage? Tell me that. Tell me you’d shrug your shoulders, take it on the chin and say “oh well these things happen” and fork out the dough without a fight. Then have other people come along and mock you when you tell your story.

i’m not sure if you understand the concept of this forum Truth but how it works is you post about the topic in the heading.
Since you struggle with that its no surprise that you havnt got a resolution to your issue.

How is Garlett travelling at the moment? Who turned out to be right, Phil Smart or the AFL recruiters? Just asking …

flip side to Smarts argument is that there might be some kid who might not have the same ‘potential’ of a Garlett, but never misses training, does all the ‘right’ things off the footy field, keeps his head down is dependable, reliable etc…yeah perhaps boring but I’d be pissed if my son missed out on getting drafted because some other kid with ‘issues’ got picked ahead of him, because he simply had more ‘potential’. All these kids know the score in terms of what the AFL clubs are looking for on /off the footy field. Surely Garlett knew that footy ability alone wasn’t going to get him drafted…footy is a business, AFL players are in the public eye 24/7, their actions before, during and after the game are a reflection not only on them, their employees but the code overall.

Yeah some kids need a bit more time to mature, perhaps Garlett with a season or two playing for shite money, in front of shite crowds will fast track his maturity. No better way to prove all n sundry wrong by getting your head down, keeping your nose clean and doing the ‘right’ thing not only on the footy field but off it too! If Garlett does that, he’ll have a dozen AFL clubs knocking at his door and hopefully the temperament to deal with it to. Fingers crossed the kid can do it!

A very good post Freez. Well said.
It was interesting to hear that Michael Walters had spoken to Garlett about what is need.He should listen, because Walters certainly has turned his career around.
Potential has to reach performance at some stage, or should, but for some it never happens.Maybe Garlett will be one of those who never makes it.

On the surface the non-selection of Garlett based on that particular photograph is tenuous to say the least. Of greater significance is that perhaps the AFL should be moving towards increasing the age of the potential draftees. This would have a twofold benefit. Firstly and more importantly it would allow the potential draftees to grow and mature into young adults with greater life skills and maturity to handle the ppressures of being an AFL player. Secondly, it would be provide a great boost to the local WAFL, SANFL etc club insofaras they would be able to have the use of those players for another year or two.

There has grown a myth that unless you are drafted at 17-19 you have missed the boat and I suspect that in Garlett’s case there was a great expectation that he would be a high draft pick and when that did not come to fruition then there was a considerable let down and sense of ‘failure’. Freezin is right and I am sure that most Swans’ supporters support that view that if he knuckles down this year, amd Walters is a classic case study, that there will be another opportunity for him.

Murran Nemwan’s situation may be of some benefit for Garlett and probably the reverse will also apply to Newman.
