There was a big concert at Subi last Feb.Full house.Adel think that’s her name.
Perth Glory was 3-0 in a NSL GrandFinal and lost.
Rugby World Cup England -South Africa.Springbocks played at Subi a few times.
International Rules V Ireland .Last game at Subi.
1969 WP v EP 51,000 crowd.Perths population between 6-700,000.That was an amazing crowd and beaten twise in the 1970’s.The Wafl in its heyday was bigger than today’s AFL in WA.
In the 1958 Subi also hosted the Queen and Queens mother
Unfortunately at least 4 have passed away that I am aware of…
Michael Hutchence from INXS
Chrissie Amphlett from The Divinyls
James Freud from The Models
David McComb from The Triffids
All were singers of their respective bands too sadly.
I saw U2 there a few years ago which was something special. Also Creedence Clearwater Revival about 40 years ago.
1997 WAFL GF
2009 WAFL GF
2005 WAFL GF
1977 finals series and GF and 1978 2nd semi and heartbreaking 1978 GF still goes down in history as one of the great grand finals.
State of Origin series on a Tuesday in the 80’s were unbelievable.
- The Beer Caravans on top of the Hill - you could actually buy Jugs of Swan Draught with glasses.
- My 12 year old mate sleeping over at the gates the night prior to the 1979 GF ( imagine doing that now)
- The Old Scoreboard
- The WANFL Members Stand and the Subiaco Municipal Oval Stand.
- St Patricks Day March and Rally in the 50’s ( my folks time).
I wonder whatever happened to the old scoreboard on the outer wing was pretty good and I’m sure a club somewhere around the state could have used it?
The one behind the city end goals when the grass hill was replaced with terracing in 94/95 was another that’s whereabouts are unknown?
Remember the electronic scoreboard that was situated in the city end outer forward pocket brought in about 81/82 pretty primitive nowadays but was all the rage back then.
Gee saw some changes there in the last 40 years or so.
According to Wikipedia the largest crowd ever at Subiaco Oval.
AFL-SF V EF 1979 GF 52,960.1975 WPvSF 52,751.Well done SF.
Largest crowd with seating on the grassed areas-Adele Feb 2017 -65,000.
AC-DC.Guns+Roses.Paul McCartney. Where other non Afl events.
The football commission got a sling for everything that was played of performed at Subi.Thats not the case at Burswood.Interesting to see where footy revenue is in Wa in the next decade. The AFL sides no longer pay the commission for the Subi rent.
The original main score board on the Roberts Rd Wing, was great, it was fully traditional with Race Results, I’m pretty sure the structure was mainly concrete, there was a kiosk underneath the terrace steps, for a long time it was sponsored by METTERS Stoves then Samboy Chips.
There was also a ground level scoreboard on the members sign, basic black and white job, score only.
Yep the Ping Pong Ball Lights Score Board all the rage late 80s.
Another memory where the giant MARLBORO Signs around ground.
I was at both record breakers , 52, 960 and 65,000
Tbh anyone that witnessed 1979 , knows there was well over the official figure there, attendants lost control of gates and fences.
Gtr I have no doubt the 1980 WAFL GF would also have topped 52,000 but unfortunately the 2 tier stand was under construction at the time thus resulting in a reduced capacity…was officially opened early in the 1981 season!
Another great memory of Subi was Premiership Sides walking up the steps of the Old WANFL Members Stand to receive the Premiership Cup…
Opening minutes on 1981 GF
One of my earliest memories of listening to footy on the radio was hearing Frank Sparrow say “on the Metters scoreboard” In my wide eyed youth I was imagining a scoreboard shaped like a stove that you could warm your pie in…
Did anyone attend the first state of origin game in October 1977 organised by Leon Larkins where Barry Cable and Co ran amok?
What about the original old CALTEX Time Clock…
Like BC i was at the Creedence Clearwater Revival concert in 1972. Led Zeppelin also played either the week before or the week after.
1970 was my first grand final as a young fella. Disappointing result, same in 1974.
1976 and 1977 different feeling altogether.
I won’t even think about 1978.
Also saw some great state games against the Vics and SA. I remember one game in about 77 when we were well beaten by the Vics and Peter Hudson kicked 10 goals. He was a master full forward.
Neil Diamond was another good one.
If you’re referring to the Neil Diamond concert in December 1975, that was at the WACA. He may have played at Subi another time, I’m not sure.
My top five memories…
- 1975 GF WP v SF… first GF only a whipper snapper
- 1989 GF C v SF
- 1992 GF SF v EF
- 1997 GF EF V SF
- 2005 and 2009 GF"s
Sorry but all SF memories , I am little biased. The first three still give me nightmares. But the others do give me plenty to smile about. Here’s hoping for another one before we move to another venue.
Nah the one after 75…about 15 years ago,
