Lathlain Redevelopment

Might present a great opportunity for the opposition to get on the front foot and pledge 10 million to get this done and put the heat on Rita. Otherwise it might be time to pull the trigger on another tactic I heard was on the table. It would take the Lathlain Park precinct out of the TOVP hands.

Care to elaborate

DD is saying two things:

  1. that the opposition could pump in some coin to make up the short fall and win a few votes from swing voters.
  2. If the TOVP are seen to be blocking a sensible community building project that has had good federal and state money thrown at it, a project that has now been languishing - well the state government may just compulsory acquire the venue off them. They make the threat as a leverage sort of thing. Art of the Deal. Everyone learning of Trumpy.

It’s really very beautiful

I understood the money from the opposition. Was referring to what tactics he meant that would take the precinct out of the TOVP’s hands.

Think Burswood Peninsula prescint. It would come under state planning and taken out of the council’s control.

COUNCIL RESOLUTION (23/2025): Moved: Cr Peter Melrosa Seconded: Cr Jesse Hamer That Council:

  1. Notes the advocacy efforts to external stakeholders for additional funding for Stage 2 Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project – Zone

    1. Notes the potential options for continuing the construction contract with the preferred tenderer at a later stage for Stage 2 Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project – Zone
    1. Notes the options for the future of Stage 2 Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project – Zone 1 will be presented to the Council in March 2025.

Carried by exception resolution (8 - 0) For: Mayor Karen Vernon, Cr Claire Anderson, Cr Sky Croeser, Cr Peter Devereux, Cr Jesse Hamer, Deputy Mayor Bronwyn Ife, Cr Peter Melrosa and Cr Lindsay Miles Against: Nil

So from what I can gather - the build will be put to the council again on Tuesday 4th March.

Council tonight again rejected recommendations to proceed with redevelopment. Similar to October 2024 - not willing to wear the funding shortfall which was then $3.46 Million and of course now gone up. Currently $4.8 million. They want the feds and state Gov to increase their ~ $15 Mill to $19 Mill.

This has been going on for 6-7 years now.

The council meeting is astounding to watch. They with straight faces and all seriousness spent 2 hours talking about removing 3 speed humps on Archer street. The end decision here was again to talk about it again in a couple of months.

Hamstrung, weak, impotent describes the lot of the councillors

The PFC should bleed the council dry now on fixing up the dilapidated facilities - before having to knock it al down anyway.

Truly something to ponder - All of them well dressed and congratulating them selfs. Amazing.

Sounds like a couple of hours you’ll never get back TF. I’ve been told the money isn’t the problem, it’s the Mayor. Perhaps the new Minister of Sport and Recreation and Treasurer and regular visitor to Lathlain functions is going to write the cheque that gets this done once and for all.

I grew up in my very early years around the corner of Archer Street. We drove down Archer St everytime we visited my grand parents. They’ve ruined it I recently saw the speed humps. All because they are trying to turn it into some swanky up market attraction.

this in Mondays West 24/3/25

I hope that Barra has a conversation with her.
This is ridiculous, years and years of delay.
If funding is finally re-arranged, I hope the Government takes the ground out of VPC control.

That’s the only way forward.

This will ultimately be the same for Swans and SF to confront trying to pursue redevelopment. Loopy local government. So Rita can make a stand again after intervening in the EF fiasco.

Was a story on it tonight on 7 showing footage of delapitated showers, toilets and medical room. Safiotti had a go at the TOVP so hopefully they (state government) take it out of their hands and get it done.

Blue skies ahead it seems. West reports today that WA Govt has taken it out of the hands of TOVP.
Good job Rita.

I read that as the State Gov have asked to take the project out of the TOVP hands. Not that they have. I imagine that the town will play very hard ball and would probably rather see the whole thing burn than give it up to the State Gov.

It did read it that Barra was very happy with the announcement. I expect we will have a communique from him soon.

Statement from the Club/Barra yesterday on their social media accounts.

Good on Rita, please tell TOVP to bugger off.
As long as we have control over our bar and not Events Corp or who ever.

Well it looks like the ball is rolling, government is pulling the rug out from under the Mayor. Hopefully that means the TOVP don’t make a penny out of the future of Lathlain Park redevelopment but no doubt the pricks will triple up on parking inspectors on game days and nights.

Barra was interviewed at half time yesterday and said there could be an announcement soon about the redevelopment. Mentioned new Sports Minister Rita Safiotti so sounds like they are going to step in and get it done.

Hopefully construction begins straight after the season ends.
