Dennis Cometti

Very sad news indeed. Condolences to the family.

Didn’t he also coach Wanneroo in the Sunday league to something like 5 straight flags?

Not sure to be honest.

Quite possibly, but I just remember his presence at Maddington.

Dennis was Captain/Coach of Maddington and lead them to 3 successive Premierships 1974, 75, 76 lost the 1977 GF and later coached Osborne Park & then Kelmscott to a flag 1979 before his WP stint 1982-84.
He did play at Wanneroo and won their B&F in 1973 before heading to C/C Maddington but I think it was Greg Brehaut who coached most of those Wanneroo Premierships in the late 70s early 80s in the WAFA?
Swansfan4life will know the exact details.

Well, it appears I was wrong. I’ve just seen a clip by Ryan Daniels on You Tube about Dennis’s passing that shows the time recorded as being after I turned the Channel off.
My apologies.

A tribute from Daves cartoons the the Legend.
Great work Dave.

Dennis played for Wanneroo in 1973 and was captain of the league team coached by Joe Fanchi. He won the club fairest and best on a countback and scored 16 goals out of 55 in a game against Cockburn East Fremantle.
He was captain/coach of Maddington from 1974 to 77, winning three premierships and losing the 1977 South Suburban Murray FL Grand Final by 104 points.
In 1978, Dennis became captain/coach of Osborne Park and guided them to a Grand Final, only to lose to Wanneroo.
In 1979-80, Dennis went further south and coached Kelmscott to the 1979 premiership, their first since 1962. After a fifth place in 1980, Dennis had a break from coaching for a year before the West Perth position became available.
Wanneroo’s premiership coaches when they won six in a row were Peter Burton (1978), Greg Brehaut (1979-82) and Stuart Hillier (1983).

Excellent tribute on NINE tonight as well lead by Thommo, he spent 5 years there when the AFL mad the move.

Thommo also mentioned Altzeimers claimed DC.

Very sad.

Simply the best..funny subtle and so clever…im sure the moronic boof heads had no dea of his clever lines back in the day. Never had to yell…a subtle infliction in his voice did enough, one of me favs…

Darren Gasper had a shot at goal and it hit the post..

" Gasper and the unfriendly post"

It’s a disgusting disease
in the same room with cancer & MND
and it takes hold so very quickly

Not much hope for the rest of us if that disease can claim such a sharp mind.

It looks like the Wildcats paid their respects to Dennis today wearing black tape across the left shoulder of their singlets.

Someone we all liked, despite our team allegiances

State Funeral for Dennis,if his Family give their Consent to it,is a No Brainer.

I saw a photo yesterday on a friends FB page of three legends of the broadcast box from WA.
Dennis Cometti, George Grljusich and Wally Foreman.
What a trio they would have been to listen to calling a game.
All were very knowledgable commentators of many sports.

I don’t get PerthNow,but I’ll make an exception today.

Good article on Dennis on Page 1.4 and 5 of various Editions.

One of my favourite Dennis Cometti comments was when he was still calling the WAFL at the WACA one night the old Kresta Cup pre season competition must have been around 1987/88 and Swans were playing.
One of our new recruits was a player called Steve Bazzo and when he had one of his first possessions Dennis in his customary calling style said “Picked up by Bazzo, well with a name like that he was destined for Swans”.
Also enjoyed his calls with Eric Sarich around that same time, they had a great chemistry together in the commentary box.

Dennis first came to prominence for me,in the early eighties ABC crossovers to Gloucester Park, where he hosted the last few races of the Friday Night Trots, and the track caller was either George Grljusich or John Hunt from memory, but I stand to be corrected.
