Coach under pressure

Which two do you consider aren’t vital components then?

He is obviously saying Peel and WC

I’d have preferred it if Salecic was told by the board “season’s gone, unlikely you’ll get a new contract, but until season’s end play the kids to see if any of them are worth persisting with”.

Now not only are WP looking for a new senior coach, they also need to find another 4 or 5 league coaches as well.
Plus last year’s captain Dean Munns has allegedly pulled the pin too.

Then you’d probably say goodbye to a shed-load of money going into the WAFL from Eagles & Dockers then.

Not saying turf them out, just saying they provide the WAFL zero history or tradition compared to any of the real WAFL teams. Yes the current arrangement provides vital funds to the comp as the WAFC fall so short on that subject. The WAFC needs to grow a pair and make the very financially successful WA based AFL clubs pay a bit more into the WAFL system given the WAFC hold the licences of these 2 clubs. That would balance off the loss of the payments to play in our WAFL and leave them free to phark off into an expanded national ressies comp.

To say I’m in shock is an understatement.Really hard to understand how this got to this point.Let me start by saying any comments are pure speculation and personal interpretation.I don’t come from any internal knowledge or contacts. There are other WP posters on this site who likely closer to the “facts” than I am and if they or anyone else wants to correct my comments I welcome it.Where to begin! Firstly I think Salecic is a true legend of the club and that won’t change. It would seem he is greatly respected by his peers( or likely at least most of them) judging by the en masse resignation of the coaching staff and the former captain.I commented on early season posts that this should be a rebuilding year (mostly by getting game time into the young guys with hel from the veterans) and targets would not include a premiership but would include knocking on the door of finals,if not actually getting there. That will not be achieved.I don’t know what the targets actually were but I think it’s a fair bet they have not been met.So now is it a case of the administrators thinking minimum targets have to be met for the coach to stay or is it they don’t have the confidence in his coaching ability? 7 wins out of 28 is not a great track record but other coaches have survived with worse results. So I can only assume they had doubts about his ability to get his message across.Hence walkouts which have occurred because others think he can.I don’t know if what I’m saying is accurate but I do know one thing.Following a club for 6 decades doesn’t result in giving up- this current situation is unfortunate for all parties concerned Salecic, the players, supporters and probably the administrators but we will all survive, get stronger and rebound. And for all you snipers out there who will now come back with your “4 cents in the dollar “ comments I hope you never have to go through what everyone concerned with the club went through at the time.If you don’t think it emotionally draining, feeling ashamed, thoroughly worrying for the people who worked at the club, the volunteers, junior club personnel and a myriad of others who didn’t know if there was a club anymore well think again. Not diminishing in any way the way people who ended up losing money felt as well (especially the mum and dad businesses) but I sincerely hope nobody in the WAFL family (or anywhere) ha to go through that.I’m done.I’ve got nothing left.I hope Salecic, the players and everybody at the club can move on for everyone’s benefit. My heart beats true.

Although he must’ve been able to get the message across back in '23 when he coached the reserves to the GF (SD 57, WP 54).

Lots of comments on SportFms FB page about about Salecic’s sacking and the mass exodus of club legends from the other coaching roles in support of Salecic. A number of those comments from family members of the coaching group suggesting the club isn’t telling the whole story or the truth.

Makes it even more intriguing as to what the WP Boards motives were.

Great post mate. Well said.

Has anyone considered the possibility in all this outpouring of emotion that perhaps Salecic just isn’t up to it as a coach? The club obviously came to that conclusion at the end of last season. Perhaps player feedback or observations from board members and the football department.

Just because he’s a club legend doesn’t automatically mean he’s going to make a great coach. I heard long ago that players were confused with the game plan. It’s clearly been a messy divorce.

What i found very odd is the WP board have not been forthcoming! The silly stock standard notification on the west perth webpage leaves more questions than answers. The whole episode handled most poorly and been a complete cock up. I’m led to believe Salecic’s contract was to the end of twenty 25? Obviously contracts don’t mean much. Cannot see the sense releasing the coach just after the half way mark of the season? The board should have came out and made a proper report, sadly that still not happened! And according to reports, Dean Munns is now seriously considering his future at the club. I’d have thought they couldn’t afford to lose another player.

Maybe there is more to it. A lot of people assuming Salecic is being hard done by but maybe there is more to it. Anyway WP only pay 4c in dollar so paying out won’t amount to much.

Didn’t take long for the snipers to appear

And from what has been heard, more players are departing at seasons end.

Really? Today’s win over Peel says otherwise. Give Brad Dodd a call if you aren’t happy.

Best way to respond to a difficult week- show some character with a come from behind win. A lot of the players looked they were playing with freedom ( mostly mental I would say).Hats off to Paul Sanzone and his patched up assistants who only had 5 days to get the players to respond. The win will hardly “turn the season around “ but at least it’s a step in the right direction.Up to the players now to show character for the rest of the season.

With WP out of finals contention now do they look to retire Black and Nelson?

Interesting question TFAF.The term “Heart and Soul “ of a club/team gets used a lot and I would say all clubs can point to one or two players and say they are it.Certainly applies to Black and Nelson with us.Specifically to your question with Black firstly it all depends on his body.At the start of the season I would have thought this would likely be his last because his body was struggling to do the things his high standards had set.No problems about his mind- always helping the young kids, contributing fully and leading by example.Which is what the last two weeks have shown.I think it will be a case of when his body says “enough “ and if that is in a few weeks or a few years it’s up to him.He won’t get pushed. With Nelson it’s easy- he’s a Rolls Royce. You can hit him with a sledgehammer and he’ll be off for a quarter. My grandkids will still be watching him when he plays his 700th game!

I play a little bit of ammos, and I notice a lot of ex champs of the club retire from the league team but stay around to play ressies or even 3rds and 4th. Done right it is/would be fantastic for the up and comers development.

Good point TFAF and if done right is a win win for everyone- club and player.Blackie has always appealed as a coaching prospect with both his teaching background and just his endeavour in life.Don’t think he’s in line for coaching the club for a while but in the background in the long term.Nelly not so much.Certainly has leadership credentials but is a quieter sort and not a limelight person.Just goes quietly about his business.
