Chris Maguire

Just heard Chris has passed away at just 51 years of age. Very very sad losing former players so young. Was told by a former teammate today.

I wasn’t around when he started out at the Dees but I certainly remember him in his second stint between 2002 and 2004 where he led our goal kicking. Undersized full forward but was a very good mark and kick for goal. R.I.P Chris.

Remember him at Perth and Swans, primarily in the WAFL.

A former East Fremantle Colt.

But he spent quite a few years at Gynne Park, playing for Armadale and playing his part in breaking a 57 year drought, after previous Grand Finals ended in disappointment, particularly the year before at Gosnells Oval.

A great target to kick to for 2 Demon Clubs, kicking 9 against East Fremantle in 2003.

Left us far too young.

Rest in Peace,Chris.

Fun to watch player. Barrel chested leading forward playing out of the goal square. Not that tall but great out stretched hands. Terrific accurate kick. Sad to hear he’s gone.

Sad to hear that Chris has passed. I would often run into Chris Jr and his dad Chris Sn on jobs, they were painters. Chris Sn passed away about ten years ago, he was a very worldly man, he travelled everywhere and young Chris loved his football, they were poms and embraced the game of aussie rules. RIP to father and son

I forgot they were from the Old Dart, mate.

Did he try out with Ashfield Football Club on Guildford Rd for a while?

He may have loved to give the round ball an almighty boot, perhaps as a Goalkeeper?

A real shame this news
Maguire had to work hard to get his shot at league
not an outright superstar
but he did kick some goals which is more than lots of hopefuls
hope his family are ok in all of this

Armadale folk can set the record straight, but did he kick the last 2 Goals of the 2001 Sunday Football League Grand Final?

Any of those 2 come from a soccered kick?

He is/was the same age as me. I played juniors against him when he was playing for Bullcreek. Boy, could he roost a bomb. hell of a long kick on him.

Played with him at EF colts 1992. His dad was a massive supporter of him. Every game he was always there watching.
RIP Chris

Thanks for your input here,Ruddiger.

Played on him in 2001 when he was playing for Armadale. He took only 1 hang on me and I held him to 4. I was pretty fkn chuffed considering how good he was. A ripping fella

RIP and gone way too soon

Going by comments at the end of a Facebook post someone sent me by Boulder City football club it seems Chris took his own life sadly.

terrible news :frowning:

I can remember him kicking the last goal at John Dunn Oval that day. Fifty seven years of pain and frustration for Armadale wiped out in that single moment.
The Sunday FL had each grand final recorded onto VHS until 2000 for all three grades. 2001 was the first year they decided against it, much to the disappointment of Armadale supporters. The demand for a copy of the game would never have ended.

I wondered about that,buddy.

Oh well, having been there,it’s funny how the last few minutes stand out in the memory bank(sorta),plus old Mutley(Ash McPhail)holding aloft that big Trophy, with the Sun brilliantly shining on it,surrounded by Jubilant fans and supporters.

Not sure if Phone Cameras were in good supply back then, but hopefully some folk got some real good shots in.

I’m sure I saw some standard Photos of that day in the Clubrooms in the years that followed and undoubtedly,a beaming grin on Chris Maguire’s face!

Chris played some great games for Perth. Perhaps the best was at Cunderdin in 2004 when we beat the all conquering Subiaco. He starred with about 6 goals that day in what was a big upset in the WAFL.

I missed the fun there,as the Colts and Ressies were at Lathlain that day, also Winning, making the day a Great Treble over the Maroons.

Mobile phones were pretty average back in 2001. My phone had Snake as one of its two games, and could only store 25 SMS messages before some had to be deleted to read new ones.
The front page of the Armadale Examiner had a team photo on the front page after the Grand Final, and there are a few in the 2001 Sunday FL Yearbook.

I wonder if the WAFC have incorporated Sunday Football League Records in their small History Section?

I’m guessing Geoff Palmer has long retired, can’t be sure about Peter Troode, but a Phone call shouldn’t go astray.

Our club just posted a great tribute on our club page. Our president Adrian Barich played with him in 1994.

What I just learned earlier today was Chris kept playing up until recently in over 45’s masters football and won the EJ Whitten medal being the best player for WA and traveling with the national team to Ireland. What an incredible football career and makes his loss hard to fathom.

I actually started a Facebook page 15 years ago called WA Sunday footy which is still up and running. A large part of the Perth FC tribute is from my tribute posted on Sunday.
The page also has programs, yearbooks and photos from the WAFA and South Suburban days as well as the Sunday FL.
Programs have also been uploaded to archive.org
Apologies for getting off topic.
