Theres been some pretty diabolical batting in the BBL this weekend. We saw the Scorchers cave in to the Stars demon bowler Maddinson yesterday, the Sixers bowled out for 76, then the doozy of the lot of them with the Heat losing 10-36 to slip from 0-84 to 120 to lose to the Renegades. The upshot of all that is that the Scorchers finals chances have actually improved despite their appalling batting and if they beat the Thunder tomorrow night they will more than likely sneak in!
Considering the PS look like headless chooks or fish out of water against spin in the BBL I can see the Thunder employing the likes of Cook & Nair with Green out suspended to put them under pressure.
I’ve got a feeling they may pull out one of their better performances tonight BH. Their bowling was actually quite good against the Stars. They’ve just got to get some semblance of sanity into their batting. Livingstone needs to be told that you don’t have to try and smash every ball for 6. Game awareness is the key.
Gee how do you put a form line through the Scorchers?? They had just about a perfect game last night with a disciplined bowling performance led by Richardson and a sensible approach by Inglis and Livingstone after that flying start to ensure there would be no collapses. This is after a putrid batting display on Saturday to throw away the game against the Stars. To be fair though everybody but the Melbourne Stars have been horribly inconsistent and the Scorchers have already exceeded my expectations of them at the start of the tournament. If they can sneak into the finals they will be dangerous with a genuine pace bowler in Morne Morkel teaming up with Richardson and apparently A J Tye could be available as well. Inglis is certainly one to watch for the future and his similarity both in looks and batting style to Baz McCullum is uncanny.
I suppose Turner & Agar will come in to the team for the next clash?
I guess David & possibly Kelly might make way although when Jordan leaves for ENG ODI duties and Morkel arrives for PS duties is unknown.
apparently Morkel arrives in the next week or so.
From what I have heard, Jordon will play against Adelaide on Friday night and then will join the England camp. Morkel will then play against the Thunder in Sydney on Sunday and stay for finals if they make it.
Great performance but they are so inconsistent. They will need to overcome that if they want to win the last 2 games to make finals.
Bad news for WA shield prospects in that Shaun Marsh appeared to injure his hamstring playing for the Renegades last night. Hopefully just a minor one but it looked like he was struggling to run. It wasn’t a good night for the Renegades as Sam Harper suffered concussion when he fell over the opposition bowler in trying to complete a run and hit his head on the ground. Can’t really describe what happened in words, you would have to look at the replay. It was a bit of a freak accident.
Any hammy is at least 2-3 weeks, but given he didn’t leave the field straight away, it’s hopefully a low grade injury.

Looks like it is Green who has made way for Turner not David.
Cannot believe the way Bancroft and Agar batted tonight. There just not the right type of players for this format.
Think you will find that they were preserving the run rate at that stage gtrx. They had probably already conceded the game and they didn’t want to get bowled out for 130 as that would have had a pretty drastic impact on the NRR which may be crucial in terms of whether they make 4th or 5th. Its a bit academic though because the Scorchers have demonstrated that they are nowhere near the top 3 and would be making up the numbers in the finals. Livingstone is a powerful leg side player but he really needs to develop a few off side shots then maybe he wouldn’t be hit on the body so much. Even so beyond the openers and Marsh, the Scorchers lack power in their line up. They lost it tonight in the first 10 -12 overs of their bowling though. 181 was too much especially against the best balanced bowling attack in the competition in Rashid Khan, Siddle, Neser Stanlake and Agar. Strikers are my bet to win the tournament.
Thanks Mike good post.Adelaide look very good but do lose Rashid before the GF.
I’ve never played cricket in a serious comp, so will stand corrected. But it seems to me that when chasing, they seem to want to win the game in 10 overs rather than chase a run rate. They are a very frustrating team to watch and I agree that if they make the finals, they will just be cannon fodder.
Here is a question I would like to ask to get your opinions. It doesn’t concern the Scorchers so that may be good.
Why is there an apparent unwritten rule that the Man of the Match in 20/20 BBL matches has to come from the winning team?
In yesterday’s Sixers v Renegades match won by the Sixers with 8 balls to spare:
Aaron Finch (Renegades) scored 109 in 68 balls out of a total score of 175 with 6 fours and 7 sixes.
Josh Phillipe (Sixers) scored 61 from 42 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes and 1 stumping while fielding.
Steve Smith (Sixers) scored 66 from 40 balls with 7 fours and 1 six and did nothing while fielding.
Who got the Man of the Match? Smith. Why? Maybe because the match was played in Sydney. I don’t know.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please?
Gee what a fizzog of a performance by a team fighting for a finals berth. Probably a mercy killing but could someone please tell me why
Clean out needed and not just the players. They just didnt have a go today.
Don’t be fooled by the fightback in the last couple of overs, overall it was a dreadful performance by a team fighting for a finals berth. Probably a mercy killing but could someone please tell me why

- The Scorchers batted first when they won the toss, didn’t they read the forecast that there was likely to be a rain interruption?. The Thunder could barely believe their luck.
- They dropped Patterson who used to play for the Thunder and has batted plenty of times on that wicket and instead chose David who has done nothing this season.
- They would have expected anything from Morkel when he hadn’t played a competitive game for a month.
Clean out needed and not just the players.
I will try and answer some of these for you Mike-
Speaking of not very bright you can add Brad Hodge to that list in the commentary box who reckoned the rain reduced target was favourable towards Perth!  ![]()
