10m To Dockers Julia Gillard

Incredible. Our Labor government has given a grant of 10 million towards the development in Cockburn..Cost 114m.. 65m by the Cockburn Council which is understandable considering the benefits to the area. 10m by the Dockers who were one are one of the highest grossing clubs in the WAFL. The AFL contribution???

Now lets look at the seat. It comes under the Labor seat of Fremantle held by Melissa Parke. In the last election there was a huge swing to the Liberals. Very convenient that this grant came at this time.

The Federal Government has kicked in $10 million towards the Fremantle Dockers’ plan for a new $114 million training centre.

On a flying visit to Perth, Prime Minister Julia Gillard visited the proposed site of the new training and leisure facility in Cockburn.

The decision comes after presentations by Dockers bosses in Canberra earlier this month during the AFL’s Hall of Fame celebrations.

The multi-million dollar contribution to the $114 million state-of-the-art facility at Cockburn Central West follows an announcement in December 2012 that the Dockers had reached a heads of agreement with the City of Cockburn to develop the club’s new elite training and administration facility at the 26,000sqm green field site.

My thoughts

The whole things stinks  This money could of gone to sports that are struggling including Junior clubs etc.. Gee the WAFL clubs could of picked up over million each (yeh joking  )
It is another case of Labor wasting money when they can ill afford it.
They are trying to prop up the seat for the upcomming election?

just as an aside cardy, this facility will be used by not just the Dockers,it is a community facility.
It will have junior footballers among other sports.I should say that with swimming pools that it will bring a swimming club to the district.
It will have from what I believe a running track which will allow the kids to practice athletics.
It will have a second football oval, which will be a bonus.
It will have a gymnasium which will be available to all and sundry. No doubt a fee will have to be paid but it is a community facility so one would expect that.
I would think the facility will have a couple of function rooms, which will in turn employ people. Not a bad idea that, employing people.Same as Subi it employs many many catering staff there which people seem top forget about.
It will have shops, restaurants and such, which will employ people.
So for all that I guess it isn’t a good idea to build it.
Would you have said the same thing if the facilty was to be built in the Fremantle oval precinct!!!
If we live in the past and don’t build these facilities we are doomed.Look a the shit heap we have at Subiaco oval.I guess you are against the new stadium as well.Is that a waste of money.MMMM guess not because that is being built by a Liberal state government. But don’t forget that is with the aid of Federal money as well as State,oh and the AFL.
So I guess it depends on which side of politics you sit as to whether it is needed or not.

Gee why arent I suprised.. Like a dog at a bone but fair enough

I realise it will have other facilites for the community and did say it is good for Cockburn. Not an issue.
The side of politics people are on has nothing to do with it either. My point is the money should of been elsewhere and another example of the Quail burning money that could of been used elsewhere.. Lets not start a political argument as thread will go to shit but strange how it has gone to a Now marginal Labor seat.
The rest of you arguements are Hypothetical as it is going ahead.
I one who reckons having the ground at Cockburn is a great idea.
A lot you say is right in regards to employment etc in the area but that is not the Topic of this thread. Dont want another Thread like the one in General re Abbott.

My point is the money should of been used elsewhere if at all.
I can remember when John Dawkins was around years ago and that female minster (what was her name? Think it was Roz Kelly) Was the minister for sport and the Labour party gave money to all the struggling Amateur and junior clubs.. We got a great new clubhouse at Winnacott for the Melville Braves and the Footy team. It was certainly needed. That money was spread amongst a lot of struggling clubs who were just managing to keep their head above water.
Now that was a brilliant Government initiative and appreciated by many not just the City of Cockburn and the Dockers.

Cardy you can’t help but think that it is a political discussion when you, with the thing about the Labor Government. And also use the it is a marginal Labor seat.
That all makes it political.
Just to let you know I hate politics being discussed on her.But I think you led the discussion down that path with your opening gambit.

Will the project be good for Cockburn!Yes.
Will it be good for the locals!Yes.
Will it be good for the local sporting community! Yes.
Will it be good for getting kids to play sport! Yes.
Will it be good for employment! Yes.
Will it be good for the Notre Dame Uni!Yes.
Will it be good for sports in general! Yes.
Will it be good as an entertainment venue! Yes.
And the most vital one which other than the political side of things that I think you object to is
Will it be good for the Fremantle Football cleub! Yes.

Ok agree with all those points. And they were going ahead whether they got a 10 million dollar grant anyway. The project was not at risk and the 10 million had nothing to do with the project getting off the ground and it is going ahead.

I think you are missing the point. In a nutshell Gillard had no right to make the handout and why out of all the deserving charities and issues would SHE and her government decide to give it to the Dockers???

10 mill here, now a 100 mill for hospitals etc in Adeliade just this morn, another 600 mill if Colin signs up for goneski… ERRR WHERE YA GETTIN THIS MONEY FROM… no comment or questions on that i notice

I have made my point of view known.,and from here on refuse to make any further comment on the political discussion.

I agree Cardy what a complete waste of tax payers money! ..if Freo want a new training facility they should pay for it themselves. I would much rather the $10 million was spent on the 7 WAFL clubs who are fair dinkum about their local communities!

It’s all politics! theres politics everywhere. whether in the the workplace or at a sporting club! i agree with A/Man, no point in arguing over it!! If your Labor, your labor, and if your Liberal, your liberal.
Nothing going to change your opinion.

Thanks Anchorman..Say no more

This has nothing to do with the AFL, as the WAFC own the Dockers licence. State pollies in the Fremantle area would have worked in with the Federal Government on sporting grants and used a successful club like the Dockers to get the funds across the line. The benefits of this would have been sold as a boost for junior sport at grassroots level in the area.

You and AM have tunnel vision and do not even get the point. The WAFC does own the licences to both WA sides and the WAFC is state government so what does that have to do with the Federal ALP?
So they selected a club that is successful and has plenty of money - So why not put the money to use in other areas

It is all a political stunt at a cost to the Australian Taxpayer whether they support the Dockers or even the AFL for that matter.

A boost to junior sport? Why didnt they put it all into Junior sport and not just the Dockers project and benefit just the Dockers zone benefiting the Dockers.

You both come up with arguments that are politically motivated..But do not answer the questions I put in my original post.. which was just a political stunt to support the sitting member. I suspect if it was a safe Liberal seat the money would of gone elsewhere!

Strangely enough, me too …

Cardy some points. I believe the Dockers made representation to the Federal Government about getting some financial support for the project. The money comes from a specific programme for such projects. It is my belief that other AFL clubs would have and will in the future receive finacial assistance for similar projects.

It has nothing to do with it being in the electorate of Fremantle.

Similarly, the Federal Government will be contributing to the cost of the new stadium. Similar, to the Gold Coast and GWS assistance previously.

I won’t get into a political discussion here but there are many examples where the Federal Government has contributed to projects in Coalition held seats. In fact the proposed referendum is aimed at provding financial assistance at the Local Government level.

The Wet Toast eagles are looking to move their training base to lathlain in time for the new Burswood stadium opening, so I’m sure they will expect the same level of support from the 3 levels of government.

Do you think east Perth will move to lathlain, if so does Perth go to subi, or do they go to Bassendean ?

A good point. If the alignment is to continue between the EPFC and WCE after the 5 years, then I think it would make sense for a displaced club like East Perth to move to the same ground as the Eagles. If this is Lathlain, then it makes sense.

Would 3 clubs be able to use Lathlain? Why not?

Otherwise it migh be financially sensible to move Perth to co-tennant with Swans at Bassendean.

Does anyone know how the co-tennant situation is benefiting the clubs at Leederville at the moment, ie financially and facility sharing?

Mike.

Not Sure , could they swap with EP and go to Leederville, or could WP move back to Leederville if EP vacate.

Maybe Bassendean is a better option.

3 clubs at Lathlain wont work - just too hard.

Perth should get some compensation, could be the catalyst for much needed ground rationalisation.

Have I missed something here? Exactly why should Perth move anywhere to accomodate the devils incarnate partnership? It is mindboggling that the home club, Perth, should have to move from Lathlain Park Oval to accommodate the club formerly known as East Perth.
